Most South African universities open their 2027 applications between April and August 2026. Applying early gives you the best chance of securing a place, especially for competitive programmes like Medicine, Engineering and Law.

When Do Applications Open?

Traditional universities usually open in April and close between June and September. Universities of technology tend to close in June or July. TVET colleges often accept applications from August to December. Always check the official institution website because dates can change.

  • University of the Witwatersrand (Wits): Opens March, closes 30 September.
  • University of Pretoria (UP): Opens April, closes 30 June.

  • Tshwane University of Technology (TUT): Opens April, closes 30 June.
  • Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT): Opens April, closes 30 September.

What You Need to Apply

Most applications require your ID or passport, matric results or mid-year report, proof of residence, and an application fee if applicable. NSFAS applicants should apply separately at nsfas.org.za.
